Why do we do dumb things? Why? There are lots of different "dumb" categories. Let's take a look
...(the following article is in no way calling people dumb who may or may not have actually performed said "dumb" things. Any relation to these things is pure coincidence)Dumb#1- Forgetting stuff/not realizing stuff until it's too lateI'm a pro at this dumbness. I am a
forgetter, my husband is not...guess how much he loves that about me. yeah, it's not his favorite. In fact I
just did something dumb. I wrote
this whole post on one of my other blogs, thinking it was this one. Then I got to re-do all the
formatting. dumb.
Dumb #2 Thinking things are going to be fine when you know they won't. "A" list dumber here too. Usually this
manifests itself in the form of me giving one of my children something to eat thinking that they will not make a mess of it. I'm pretty much wrong every time, including tonight when I let Lincoln give Lucy the rest of his
Twinkie in the car. Dumb. super dumb.
Dumb #3-Saying things before you think about them.I am a recovering dumber here. I'm pretty sure the "filter" I was born with was recalled for being defective but my parents never got the memo. Luckily, age and getting in trouble for saying lots of dumb things can somewhat improve the filter. I remember as a kid a few times getting called into the other room by my dad and him saying (flabbergasted-
ly) "did you say such and such to so and so"?...Yes, yes i did and it was really dumb of me.
Dumb #4 Dating dumb people, even when you know they are really dumb.Yeah, you know you've done it too. Unfortunately, I guess it's part of life cause I did it and all my sisters did it and all my friends. In fact I challenge you to find someone who hasn't. Why we do it, I have no idea, but it is really really dumb of us.
Dumb #5 -You could have killed yourself dumb.
This brings me to the dumbest thing I ever did in my entire life. The ones where you could have died seem to be at the height of dumbness. Picture this...a small town 18 year old girl at her first year of college in the big city
(of mesa). It's Family Home Evening night for my ward down at the Institute building. They have some random guy that someone knows teaching us self-defense. Great right. great. Afterwards as everyone is going home, we are all out chatting with this guy and see that he has a motorcycle. For some really really dumb reason, I end up going for a ride...on a motorcycle...with a guy I don't know...without a helmet...on the freeway...to his house...where he lives alone...and on the way back to the Institute he decides it will be really cool if he could break 100 miles an hour...and we did...
104...did i mention
without a helmet...then, because I knew nothing about motorcycles, I got a
huge,
huge 2
nd degree burn on my calf and ended up having a blister the size of my fist. dumb. so dumb. I don't even think it could get
any dumber because it was so dumb in every possible way.
I was reminded of this little escapade recently when at work, one of my patients was a 22 year old who got in a motorcycle accident going only 25 mph...without a helmet. Sadly, he will be in a facility for the rest of his life without any bodily function or speech. I feel so lucky, and stupid, and dumb. I really nailed the #5 kind of dumb with that one.
So now it's your turn. Join me in the dumb club and let us all know just how dumb you really are. Don't worry, there's safety and acceptance in numbers!
